How often should you change your pillow? Over the course of time bacteria, oil, mites and dust can all build up in your pillow leading to skin and respiratory problems. Cheaper pillows can also loose their shape after as little as 2 months leading to neck and back pain due to lack of support. The life of a pillow depends on the type and quality of pillow you are using.
Feather and down filled pillows loose their shape after 2 years. Polyester filled pillows loose their shape after as little as 2 months. Foam pillows by far outlast these other types of pillow as the integrity and composition of foam ensure that it will always bounce back. A good pillow should support your head and neck, keeping the spine straight when you lie down. Try Sammy Margo's 'broken pillow test' ; fluff up the pillow, fold it in half length ways then place a trainer on top of the folded pillow. If it stays folded then its time to chuck that pillow out. If it springs back and throws off the shoe its ok to use.
